Unlike Sporty Spice Mary, I was never that great at sports. I participated in them sporadically throughout my school years but I wasn’t really that motivated to be good and it certainly did not come naturally. What was my natural gift you might ask? Quitting! I was an A+ student in that so when I eventually got sick of doing whatever I was doing (or Mary came along and started beating me with her annoying natural abilities), I quit like the total champ I am. <insert eye roll emoji>
I picked up some lukewarm feelings for running in the Air Force. I hated everything about everything working out in basic training. Jesus, it was July in Texas and I felt like I was literally standing on the tip of the sun as we PTed in the early morning, before it was ‘black flag’ and legally too hot for troops to be outside. I squeaked through those tests and got the hell out of there. In tech school and throughout my military time, we had mandatory gym time and yearly tests so it was imperative to get my lazy ass across the finish time once a year to avoid the dreaded ‘fat boy program’. So I jogged… I push around some weights… I did some sit ups here and there to get through. Somehow, I made it and shockingly even enjoyed it from time to time.
I left the military and the mandatory gym time behind, and joined various gyms and classes but it wasn’t until Freddy introduced me to Crossfit that I really thoroughly enjoyed working out. That was probably 10 years ago now. I’m still not a talented athlete but I’ve learned to like moving my body and working out and am consistently active in various forms.
My philosophy on fitness is – you don’t have to be good at something to do it… You just have to be committed to bettering yourself, do things you enjoy and want to take care of yourself. I look forward to talking more about my love of fitness and overall wellness. I’m not an expert in either things but I sure have tried a lot of things and can at least impart my experiences in hopes that they help!
